The Friday Letter · October 9, 2026

Same route, nearly twice the fare. This week was about the price of timing, plus a Gulf hurricane and a thin fuel cushion out West.
Gulf Coast alert: Hurricane Isaias
As of 7:20 a.m. CDT on Oct. 9, Isaias was a major hurricane (120 mph) forecast to make landfall that night or early Saturday inside a warning area from Ocean Springs, Miss. to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida. Pensacola and Destin-Fort Walton Beach airports had closed, and major airlines waived change fees for Oct. 9-10 Gulf Coast flights.
In the sky: shift the date, keep the trip
- $402 and $452. Average domestic round trips for Thanksgiving (up 31%) and Christmas (up 23%), per Hopper.
- Same trip, 88% more. A 3-night LAX to New York (Newark) trip on United was $487 for Dec. 5-8 and $914 for Dec. 23-26.
- Move the day. KAYAK’s data showed leaving Monday, Nov. 23 instead of Friday, Nov. 20 saves 18%, and Thanksgiving Day itself can run up to 19% lower. For Christmas, Dec. 21-22 beat Dec. 19 by 18%, and a Jan. 2 return beat Dec. 27 by up to 45%.
- California’s calendar helps. Most big districts are out Nov. 23-27 and from Dec. 21, the cheap days to leave.
On the road: gas is easing, but the cushion is thin
- Relief has started. California slipped from $6.40 to $6.35 in a week (AAA, Oct. 8); the Auto Club credits winter-blend gasoline. The U.S. average was $4.36.
- The West has less margin. Closed refineries in Los Angeles (2025) and Benicia (2026) cut about 17% of California’s capacity and 11% of the West Coast’s. An estimated 22% of the state’s gasoline demand now needs imports, up from 3-7%.
- Two more risks. The EIA raised its fourth-quarter Brent forecast to $105 a barrel, and Isaias had shut in 63% of Gulf oil output by Thursday. Budget for $6 or more.
This week’s checklist
- Set Thanksgiving fare alerts now. Plan to buy the week of Oct. 19.
- Price Monday, Nov. 23 or Thanksgiving Day, not Friday, Nov. 20.
- For Christmas, check Monday, Dec. 21 or Tuesday, Dec. 22, and watch late October.
- Driving? Budget California gas at $6 or more a gallon.
- Flying to the Gulf or Florida? Buy travel protection before a storm is named.
One piece of advice
Set the alert today. Buy the week of Oct. 19. Fares jump inside two weeks of the holiday.
Fares as of Oct. 9, gas as of Oct. 8, storm details as of 7:20 a.m. CDT Oct. 9; all may have moved. Fares shown are examples and may be Basic Economy.
